Ilim Group is an environmentally responsible company, with care for the environment being one of its core priorities.

Environmental policy
Ilim Group has adopted a policy regulating the Company's environmental health and safety efforts. The policy was developed with due account of the Russian legislation requirements, Ilim Group's experience and the highest international standards assumed by International Paper. The Company's strategy with regard to environmental safety is focused on introducing environmentally friendly technologies in all production cycles from wood harvesting to manufacturing of finished goods — paper and packaging.

Responsibility
Each Company employee is responsible for environmental safety. Ilim Group initiates internal control efforts to monitor compliance with the environmental regulations set by the Company, as well as the Russian laws and other regulations governing environment protection issues.
In 2009 Ilim Group has prepared a report containing comprehensive analysis of environmental projects implemented in recent years and plans for 2009.

Principles of environmental protection
In its operations Ilim Group is governed by a number of the company's environmental principles. The Company strives to improve environmental activity by supporting research and development work. Ilim Group continues to implement projects which facilitate power saving and enhance power utilization efficiency using best available technologies. The Company implements projects aimed to increase combustion of secondary fuel and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
Certification
Ilim Group has established an efficient environmental management system by introducing and maintaining the ISO 14001 series international standards at all of its production locations.
The Company is the Russian leader in forest management certification. More than 80% of all forest resources leased by the Company, which is more than 4.1 million hectares, have been certified to FSC standards.
Biodiversity preservation
In order to identify and protect rare species of plants, birds and animals in the regions of its logging operations, Ilim Group co-operates with universities that develop recommendations for preservation of biodiversity in the Company's forest lease areas. The Group also performs on-going monitoring in order to identify and assess the effect of logging operations on the populations of rare plants, birds and animals.
Reforestation
The total area of the Company's logging operations amounts to approximately 28 thousand hectares per year. All of these areas are covered by the Company's reforestation activities.
The Company plans to improve its reforestation technology and to convert to ball-rooted planting stock in forest planting.
